If you’re running out of ways to keep the kids entertained before term-time routines fully kick in, there’s still one magical adventure waiting for families in London: the Dragonfly Festival at WWT London Wetland Centre.
Running until 22 September 2025, this first-ever celebration of dragonflies has already captured imaginations — and there’s still time to be part of it.
A Summer of Dragonflies
Dragonflies are some of nature’s most dazzling creatures, and at this festival they take centre stage. Families can enjoy:
-
A dragonfly foot safari, discovering these winged wonders in their natural habitats.
-
An outdoor macro photography exhibition, bringing the intricate beauty of dragonflies up close.
-
Chalk art, pond dipping, and mini beast hunting at weekends — perfect for curious little explorers.
And for those who love a splash of creativity, the brand-new Iridescence installation is not to be missed. Floating sculptures, set across the water, shimmer like dragonfly wings in motion — a magical sight that’s both art and science combined.
Fun with a Purpose
“Dragonflies are amazing little creatures, but don’t just take our word for it, come and see for yourselves,” says Alexia Hollinshead, General Manager at WWT London. And she’s right — dragonflies aren’t just pretty to look at, they play a crucial role in wetland ecosystems.
WWT London Wetland Centre is one of the UK’s official British Dragonfly Society Hotspots, home to more than 20 species. That makes this festival a brilliant opportunity for budding naturalists and mini scientists to learn while having fun.
More Than Just a Day Out
Nestled in Richmond upon Thames, WWT London Wetland Centre is already a favourite with families looking for nature in the city. With its 105 acres of reserve, six hides for wildlife watching, flat accessible paths (buggy-friendly!), and a café for those much-needed parent pit stops, it’s the perfect backdrop for a late-summer family day.
And every ticket supports WWT’s vital conservation work, so you’re helping protect wetlands and wildlife with every visit.
