With staycations on the rise and families once again looking to get away during the summer, it’s never been more important to pick the right destination. A study has named UK’s best beaches for families based on a range of metrics such as safety, friendliness and entertainment. Ventnor Beach on the Isle of Wight has been named the most child-friendly beach in the UK, and also boasted the best safety score of all shores analysed in the study. Runner-up top kid-friendly beaches included Woolacombe Beach in Devon and Whitesands Beach in Pembrokeshire.

Ahead of English Wine Week starting today, food and drink reporter Rosalba Costantini and I visited the beautiful Great Bardfield Vineyard, near Braintree, for a wine tasting experience. The county’s tourism body, Visit Essex, has launched a campaign to firmly place Essex on the gastro map. Highlighting the county’s boom in Essex wine and vineyards, movers and shakers in the industry I met there marked the industry’s recent successes. The fizzy wine is slightly more acidic than French or Italian Champagne, but it is good and on an unsually sunny week like this in England very refreshing.
