Director Tom Hooper has a habit of making films that attract awards. Remember The King’s Speech? Who could forget it…. Then came his version of Les Miserables. His third offering, released on New Year’s Day, is The Danish Girl and, once again, it looks like Oscar bait. Its star, Eddie Redmayne, won all the big Best Actor gongs last year. For film fans, January and February are the best time of the year. And the worst. The awards season means that there’s a glut of good films released over those two months to make sure they’re in contention. And it also means trying to squeeze in as many cinema visits as possible over just a couple of months.
Except that 2016 might be slightly different. Some of the titles tipped as contenders were released months ago: Inside Out in July and Carol more recently in November. Which means that the start of the year could be a little less fraught than usual. It’s tradition. Turkey, pudding – and a look back at the best films of the year. And who am I to do otherwise?
For my top five this year, I’ve set two rules. I’m only choosing from films that have been released in UK cinemas during 2015 (so, for instance, the ones I saw at the London Film Festival but which haven’t been given a general distribution aren’t in contention) and I’m only including movies which I’ve reviewed for London Mums.
