On Sunday 5th October London Mums Magazine was invited to a very special screening of Gaby’s Dollhouse The Movie at The Vue Cinema, Leicester Square. We arrived in the morning to find many excited little faces waiting to meet Gaby herself, and it was done beautifully. A quick photo, then up the stairs to a room full of activities and snacks!
We did a little crafting, got a colourful hair braid, and then in we went.
Now, I have to admit I was very excited about this screening. It’s exactly the kind of film I’ll happily sit through — almost as glued as my daughter!
The film was cast to perfection — not just the wonderful Gaby herself, played by Laila Lockhart Kraner, but also a very familiar face: Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, Downsizing), who plays the hilarious character Vera, owner of the comedic cat Marlene. Gloria Estefan also plays Gaby’s grandmother, which instantly took me back to my teens, and you’ll hear plenty of familiar voices along the way (Jason Mantzoukas, Fortune Feimster, and more).
The story centres around how to get the dollhouse back after it accidentally escapes down the rolling hills of Cat-Francisco! (Many words have been changed to include funny cat references which my daughter loves!) It soon ends up in the wrong hands (the hilarious Kristen Wiig again), and the adventures begin.
Seamlessly transforming from live action into animation, this film really grips you. There are stunning scenes full of colour as the characters are rescued and reunited — and of course, plenty of meaningful messages for kids (and adults!) along the way.
I feel like this film managed to squeeze so many special little moments into it. Ones that children relate to but also us too.
This has become our go-to cinema for special days out — the perfect location where children can soak up the excitement of being in such a central, buzzing spot.
There’s a great choice of restaurants nearby, and as for the cinema itself — it truly has the comfiest seats in London! Those giant leather recliners make such a difference to the experience for me.
Gaby’s Dollhouse ‘s main message? Even when we’re grown-ups, we can still enjoy the magic of imagination and play — sometimes we just need a little reminder!
