The 2016 awards season seems to have been going on for ever, but the end is in sight. The Oscars take place at the end of the month, but first come the BAFTAs, on Sunday evening. In a week packed with big new releases at the cinema – The Revenant and Creed among them – one of the smaller ones is making a big impression. Just arrived in cinemas, Lenny Abrahamson’s Room, certificate 15, has already won a Golden Globe for its star, Brie Larson, and is nominated in several BAFTA and Oscar categories. All for a film that’s set in a 10 foot by 10 foot world.
London Mums’ resident film critic, Freda Cooper, gives her verdict on a film where parent/child relationships are less than sugar-coated.

Director Tom Hooper has a habit of making films that attract awards. Remember The King’s Speech? Who could forget it…. Then came his version of Les Miserables. His third offering, released on New Year’s Day, is The Danish Girl and, once again, it looks like Oscar bait. Its star, Eddie Redmayne, won all the big Best Actor gongs last year. London Mums’ film critic, Freda Cooper, wanted to see if a double whammy was on the cards.
