Rumpelstiltskin Show Review

Rumpelstiltskin is an unmissable new show that appeals audiences of all ages and is the perfect Christmas treat for the whole family. The show runs at the Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall until the 6th January 2019.  Rumpelstiltskin is a unique spin on the classic fairytale from award-winning Australian theatre companies Windmill Theatre Company and State Theatre Company South Australia.

The story

King’s daughter and haute couture wannabe designer Harriet (Sheridan Harbridge) sells her future most precious treasure to wicked goblin Rumpelstiltskin (Paul Capsis) in the hope of making it in the city. Her precious treasure happens to be her baby. She will go to great length to re0unite with him.

The verdict

Bringing a new twist to the classic Brothers Grimm’s fairytale, Rumpelstiltskin is re-imagined as a wicked fashion designer making diamonds. It’s a great pop musical that children, parents and grandparents all equally enjoyed. Kids were impressed by the vibrant costumes, impressive special lighting effects, bold sets and larger-than-life characters.

The highly energetic live musicians and performers were very engaging while interacting with the audiences throughout the show. To make it more contemporary and appeal to preteens and teenagers, the script added lots of references to smartphone, hashtags, slang, Instagram and other social media. What also made the show very engaging were the enchanting animations by Chris Edser. I particularly loved the set’s concentric spirals.

The Southbank’s Queen Elizabeth Hall is a spectacular stage with lots of space and lots of modern technology to support this modern take of the classic fairytale. I wish there were more musicals here. It is very conveniently located and extremely child-friendly. Before the show, there was an excellent free Christmas gospel performance in the foyer. For more information on the performance and dance 2018/19 programme at the Southbank Centre, please see HERE.

Rumpelstiltskin is a joyful and eccentric fairytale which will please the whole family this Christmas.
