If you want to know the fastest route to lots of fun, I can tell you exactly where it is: on a dance floor where nobody can hear the music but you.
Silent disco is my happy place. I know that’s a big claim, but honestly, I mean it. There’s something magical about putting on those glowing headphones and just… letting go. I’ve danced my way through a fair few unusual spots over the years – on a beach in Australia as the sun melted into the sea, tucked between exhibits in a museum, inside the walls of an actual countryside castle. Each one has been brilliant in its own daft, wonderful way. My favourite flavour is always an 80s revival night, obviously (some things never change), but my very first silent disco – my first love, if you will – was right at the top of the Shard.

Picture it: London spread out beneath you in every direction, the whole city twinkling away, and you’re up there bopping along to your own private soundtrack while everyone around you does exactly the same, just to a completely different song. Two shows in one – the view, and the joyful chaos of watching people dance to music you can’t hear. Nothing beats it. I was hooked from song one.
So when my niece rang to say she was coming to London for the weekend, I didn’t even have to think about it. Aunty Francesca knew exactly what we were doing. Twenty-three years old from Italy, proper summer trip to London – what better way to spend an evening than dancing above the clouds? Worst case scenario, I told myself, even if she hated every single track on all three channels, she’d still get to stand and stare at one of the best views in the world for a couple of hours. Hardly a hardship.
I needn’t have worried. She loved it. LOVED it. I watched her dancing, singing along at the top of her lungs (silently, to everyone but her), and yes – going back for a cocktail refill or two. Naturally, I loved every second right alongside her.
That’s the real magic of silent disco, isn’t it? Looking around and seeing a whole room of people cracking up at each other’s moves, everyone completely lost in their own channel, their own rhythm, their own little world – and somehow it all comes together into the funniest, most joyful medley you’ll ever witness. The crowd that night ranged from eighteen to what I’d guess was somewhere around seventy, and do you know what? Every single one of them was dancing. Because let’s be honest – we never really stop, do we?
If you fancy giving it a go yourselves, silent disco at the Shard is running till December 2026, so there’s still plenty of time to grab your headphones, pick your channel, and dance your heart out above London. Trust me on this one – you’ll thank me later.
Francesca
Hi, I’m Francesca! I live in central London and I’m rarely home — there’s always a gallery, gig, or show pulling me out the door. My real loves are music, art and theatre, but I’m just as happy exploring history, sport, or whatever’s newly opened and worth talking about. I’m on a constant search for London’s most enriching experiences, big and small, and I’m here to help you find them too.
