Little Scientist experiments: Nancy B’s Black Light Illuminator & Nature’s Mysteries Journal

Over the years London Mums very own little scientist Diego has made lots of progress learning about science, including biology and physics by practical experiments which we have featured in the past. He will soon be 9 and his interest in science is now more developed and requires more advanced kits to satisfy his curiosity. The best for him at this stage is Nancy B’s Science Club Black Light Illuminator & Nature’s Mysteries Journal. This is essentially a science activity kit that helps little scientists observe rocks, insects, and flowers that glow under black light.

In this kit made by Learning Resources, she teaches how to make gelatin that glows, how to detect counterfeit money, encrypt invisible codes (to the human eye) and ciphers, among other things. This kit supports STEM learning and encourages scientific exploration. It includes 22-page activity journal and black light illuminator invisible ink pen to write secret messages.

In this video you can see how Diego used the kit for his hands-on forensic experiments.

The kit includes a black light illuminator with 3 LED black lights, a black light pen and a 22-Page activity journal full of black light experiments.

The journal contains a lot of fun investigations Diego could do using the black light, for example learning more about household items, rocks and minerals, paper money, clothes, toys such as Lego bricks etc. After gathering these items, Diego recorded his findings in the journal. One of Diego’s favourite discovery was that some of his minerals are so flourescent and glow so so strong under the black light illuminator that in the dark (under the black light) they look like completely different rocks.
