How to look after your garden furniture during the summer months

Summer’s just around the corner, meaning it’s time to dust off your outdoor furniture and enjoy long, warm evenings in the garden.

But how can you look after your garden furniture during the summer months? We spoke to Robert Fernandez from online rattan furniture retailer Rattan Direct and got some tips for keeping your furniture looking fantastic.

If it rains, remove all the cushions
You’ve got to love the Great British summer; BBQs, summer fayers, warm temperatures… and the fact that a good old downpour is never far away.

If it rains while your patio furniture is outside, be sure to remove all outdoor cushions and store them in a dry place to avoid them being spoiled.

Place it in direct sunlight
Every now and again it is worth placing your garden furniture, especially if it’s made from rattan, in direct sunlight. This will help to prevent any mould or mildew setting in.

If your furniture gets a stain on it…
Don’t panic! Spillages happen, especially if you’re enjoying a drink or two with friends. If your patio  furniture gets a stain on it, simply mix some mild detergent with water and scrub out the stain as soon as possible.

TOP TIP: It’s best to let your garden  furniture dry naturally in the sun, so try to avoid the temptation to blast it with a hairdryer!

Store your furniture indoors (especially if it’s made from rattan)

Rattan furniture is great for the garden, but did you know that it isn’t actually full time outdoor furniture?

Keeping your rattan furniture outdoors permanently could cause some damage, such as fading from the sun.

To ensure your rattan furniture stays looking better for longer, store it indoors when it’s not being used.

Be careful how you move it

The feet of your patio furniture have been designed to withstand a significant amount of weight. They’re not, however, designed to be dragged across the floor.

If you’re moving your garden  furniture, make sure you lift it up, don’t just drag it, as this could result in the feet breaking. It could even damage your floor.

Top tips for outdoor furniture upkeep

  • When cleaning your garden furniture, use an old toothbrush to get into all the nooks and crevices.
  • Watch out for bird droppings. Bird droppings contain a level of acid, which can cause damage to your furniture. If you notice a bird dropping on your furniture, treat it like a stain and scrub it off as soon as possible.
  • If your cushions are made of canvas, chances are you’ll be able to just remove the covers and put them in the washing machine, so check this before spending time cleaning them by hand.
