Books we love: Things You Didn’t Know About Chimneys by John Hughes

If you’re on the lookout for a quirky new read to spark your child’s imagination, London Irish author John Hughes has something rather special up his sleeve. His latest children’s novel, Things You Didn’t Know About Chimneys, is already drawing comparisons to the mischievous magic of Roald Dahl.

Things You Didn't Know About Chimneys Paperback

The story follows ten-year-old Millie, who finds herself dispatched to the mysterious Monkspew Manor for the summer. It’s hardly her dream holiday, but things take a decidedly intriguing turn. With crumbling Tudor chimneys, oddball helpers, and curious happenings echoing through the corridors, Millie soon discovers that the manor has far more to reveal than its dusty paintwork.

Hughes – celebrated for his sharp wit and wonderfully skewed imagination – has created a world where mischief and mayhem sit comfortably alongside heart. Readers aged nine and up will find plenty to enjoy in his playful language, colourful characters, and the deliciously topsy-turvy atmosphere that transforms everyday moments into extraordinary adventures.

Underneath the fun lies a story about curiosity, courage, and compassion – delivered with the sort of warmth that makes Hughes a refreshing new voice in children’s literature.

The story

Bert Bogglethrop and his team, armed with enthusiasm and some highly questionable bargain-bin paint, are determined to revive the dilapidated Monkspew Manor – complete with its elaborate Tudor chimneys. But as work begins, strange and inexplicable events cast doubt over everything, from the estate’s condition to its rightful ownership.

Enter Millie, reluctantly spending her school holiday at the manor with her devoted Nanny, Mrs Braceworthy. What starts as an unwelcome stay quickly becomes a mystery worth unravelling. Millie’s curiosity is piqued, and with a few unlikely allies by her side, she sets out to uncover the truth behind the oddities lurking in the chimneys and shadowy corridors.
