The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts is expanding its presence in North London with the launch of a brand-new academy in Angel. The first session will take place on Saturday, 25 April, welcoming local children and young people aged six to 18.
Based at Steps Studios on Goswell Road, the academy will run three-hour sessions every Saturday from 9:15 am to 12:30 pm, offering young people the chance to explore three unique classes: Comedy & Drama, Musical Theatre, and Film & TV, in a fun, inclusive and professionally led environment.

The launch builds on the success of PQA Islington, led for the past six years by Principal Thomas Sankey. A former professional musical theatre performer and graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Thomas also holds a Research Masters specialising in performer wellbeing. His performance credits include Kinky Boots, Elf, and The 12 Tenors. His passion lies in creating supportive, creative spaces where young people can thrive.
Principal Thomas said, “I pride myself on bringing together brilliant teams who foster positive, encouraging spaces for young performers to grow. With our new academy in Angel, we’re excited to extend the opportunities we’ve offered in Islington to even more young people. The venue itself is fantastic; it regularly hosts auditions and West End rehearsals. I genuinely can’t think of a better place for our students to train and be inspired.”
Young people at PQA Angel will have the opportunity to develop industry skills through weekly classes, in?house performances, cinema screenings of their own short films, and the chance to submit their work to international film festivals. Students can also join PQA’s in?house talent agency, Quirky Kidz, which provides access to professional casting opportunities. In addition, they may have the exciting chance to perform in the West End at His Majesty’s Theatre.
The new academy will be supported by professional teachers Lily Cushway and Oliver McKinney, who have recently returned from headlining on international cruise ships.
Together, Principal Thomas and his team are committed to providing a safe, inclusive and inspiring environment where young people can discover their potential while learning industry?relevant skills. Alongside singing and dancing, young people will explore comedy, storytelling, screen acting and filmmaking, ensuring there is something for every young creative.
