Movie review: Whistle

On a wet Tuesday night (10th February), London Mums Magazine reporters headed to Leicester Square for a viewing of the latest horror movie release, Whistle, out in UK today.

The story follows a group of US college students in this teen horror story where you think, “Surely blowing the cursed Aztec death whistle is a bad idea,” and the teenagers respond, “Challenge accepted!”

Naturally, chaos follows, and the film delivers some wildly creative and surprisingly fun (some may say silly) death scenes that become the standout moments in the film. The film was a bit predictable but kept moving at a good pace and so you don’t really think about it and there is some good acting and likeability to the characters Chrys and Ellie which added some emotion to all the supernatural chaos.

So, although it may not have been groundbreaking and follows the classic pattern of 90’s US school horror movies, we still felt Whistle was stylish, silly at times and an easy-to-watch mix of scares and teen drama. Nothing was complicated or overly extravagant, just a fun mix of creepy moments within a teen drama. Perfect if you want a horror flick that lets you laugh and gasp without taking itself too seriously – but still has some moments to make you jump!

Even though before the movie the director Corin Hardy gathered many willing movie goers to blow some death whistles at the expectant audience, we certainly didn’t leave too petrified to ride the tube home and the movie instead felt like a fun throwback to those cheesy horror movies we used to love.

As a group of 4 we had mixed reviews on the latest horror movie ‘Whistle’ because it relied too heavily on cheap jump scares instead of building real suspense or a meaningful storyline. The plot was weak and the characters weren’t developed enough for me to care about what happened to them. Many of the scary moments seemed forced, with loud noises and sudden appearances taking the place of genuine psychological tension. I also found some scenes not believable, the gruesome parts were unnecessarily drawn out and not frightening at all!

Overall, it didn’t leave a lasting impression and felt more frustrating than scary. The group generally enjoyed it and scored it a 5/10 – perfect popcorn horror.
