On Sunday 26th July London Mums Magazine young and less young reporters were invited to review the new PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, a prehistoric adventure that younger fans will love. There aren’t many better ways to spend a Sunday morning than watching the excitement on your children’s faces as they walk into a PAW Patrol premiere.
We were invited to the all-media gala screening of PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie at Cineworld Leicester Square’s impressive IMAX screen, and from the moment we arrived it was clear this had been designed with young fans in mind.
The foyer had been transformed with giant PAW Patrol graphics, interactive displays and plenty of photo opportunities. Before the screening, families were treated to breakfast with croissants, juice, tea and coffee, while children enjoyed glitter tattoos, games, character appearances and challenges hosted on stage with prizes to be won. It created a brilliant atmosphere and built the excitement before the film even began.
As we took our seats, every child received a PAW Patrol goodie bucket complete with popcorn and water before the lights dimmed.
A brand-new adventure
The latest film begins with the pups carrying out a dramatic rescue during a storm at sea before finding themselves stranded on a mysterious island that hides an incredible secret: dinosaurs are still alive.
When the discovery attracts scientists from around the world, Mayor Humdinger sees an opportunity to get rich after spotting valuable diamonds on the island. His latest scheme soon turns into a race against time, with the PAW Patrol facing one of their biggest rescue missions yet.
Without giving too much away, the story introduces several new dinosaur characters, including Rhubarb, a friendly dinosaur who forms an unexpected bond with Marshall.
What did my children think?
My two boys, aged six and three, were completely captivated from beginning to end.
Their favourite part was seeing the pups wearing brand-new dinosaur armour and vehicles. The dinosaurs were an instant hit, with Rhubarb quickly becoming one of their favourite new characters. There was plenty of action, lots of laughs and just enough suspense to keep them glued to the screen without ever feeling too frightening for younger viewers.
The film’s 89-minute running time also felt just right for preschool and primary-aged children.
A parent’s view
As an adult, I enjoyed the prehistoric setting and thought introducing dinosaurs gave the franchise a fresh new direction. Marshall’s storyline is particularly enjoyable and provides some genuinely heartwarming moments.
However, I didn’t feel the script was quite as strong as the previous two films.
The first PAW Patrol: The Movie balanced action with Chase’s emotional journey, while PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie successfully raised the stakes with the meteor powers and gave several characters memorable moments to shine. In comparison, The Dino Movie relies more heavily on spectacle than storytelling. The action is bigger than ever, but the plot feels more straightforward and doesn’t quite deliver the same emotional depth.
That said, I suspect this difference will matter far more to parents than to children.
The verdict
If your children love PAW Patrol and dinosaurs, this is almost guaranteed to be a winner. The new armour, prehistoric setting and non-stop rescues make for an entertaining family adventure that had both of my boys talking about it all the way home.
While I still think the first two films have the stronger stories, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie delivers exactly what its young audience wants: fun, friendship, exciting rescues and, of course, dinosaurs.
