Tme to talk Christmas. Yes, I know it’s October. No, I’m not sorry. Because tickets for one of the sparkliest family outings of the season have just gone on sale, and this one’s worth getting in early for.
Chelsea Winter Village & Illuminations returns to the historic grounds of Royal Hospital Chelsea from Wednesday 25 November to Monday 28 December 2026 and it’s back bigger, brighter and considerably more dazzling, with a whopping 90% of the Illuminations brand new. That’s not a light trail you’ve seen before. That’s a light trail you’ll be glad you booked.

What’s actually there?
Imagine Ranelagh Gardens turned into a proper winter wonderland: glowing sculptures, twinkling lights, Northern Lights-inspired displays and magical little moments tucked round every corner. It’s the kind of thing that makes small children go “woaaaaah” and grown adults go “…can we come back tomorrow?”
New for 2026 are installations from some of the UK’s leading light artists, including Stars of the Season, Dandelion Walk and Flame Lamps – plus two spectacular bespoke commissions, Aurora and Celestial.
Celestial is the one to look up at: vast, mirrored, diamond-like structures soaring up to 40ft high, glowing from within as light and sound shift between them. Aurora, meanwhile, does a very convincing impression of the Northern Lights, with ribbons of colour floating above you and weaving through the trees. Fancy seeing the Northern Lights without a five-hour flight and a thermal onesie? This is your moment.

Both have been created by award-winning light design studio Lucid Creates, whose CV includes Glastonbury, Vivid Sydney, Wembley Stadium and BST Hyde Park. And they’re premiering at Royal Hospital Chelsea this winter so you’ll be seeing them before most of the country.
The bit where you get to sit down
Here’s the thing that sets this apart from your average trudge round a light trail: when the trail ends, the evening doesn’t. Chelsea Winter Village is free to enter, and it’s built for lingering.

New for 2026 is the Chelsea Food Hall, serving up seasonal food (yes, actual food, not just a bag of crisps), alongside boutique Christmas shopping with artisanal independent sellers. Perfect for a bit of gift-browsing while someone else entertains the kids.
Also on the cards: the returning Après-Ski Bar and The Curling Club, traditional fairground rides, mulled wine, and live entertainment all season long including performances from the Chelsea Pensioners Choir and local choirs. Fairground rides plus mulled wine plus a choir? That’s a full evening out, that is.

“But is it rushed?” Nope.
Harry Feigen, Event Director at Chelsea Winter Village & Illuminations, explains the thinking:
“We’ve designed Chelsea Winter Village & Illuminations around that special moment when Christmas really begins, when you’re together with family and friends, surrounded by the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the season.
“This year, we want to take visitors on a journey, from the wonder of discovering the Illuminations through Ranelagh Gardens to the warmth of the Winter Village, where you can settle in with a mulled wine, enjoy some festive food and soak up the atmosphere. It’s about creating an evening that people can really enjoy at their own pace.
“With 90% of the Illuminations new for 2026 and more to discover across the Winter Village, we hope Chelsea becomes one of those Christmas traditions that families and friends look forward to sharing year after year.”
At your own pace. With mulled wine. Whoever designed this clearly has children.
