When the London Mums Magazine team were invited to see The End of Oak Street, we went along with an open mind. We knew very little about the film beforehand, and, if we’re honest, it wasn’t necessarily the kind of film we would have rushed to choose ourselves.
How wrong we were!
The End of Oak Street takes a wonderfully bizarre idea and turns it into an entertaining, unpredictable adventure. Imagine waking up to discover that your ordinary neighbourhood has been completely torn away from everything familiar and dropped somewhere that is anything but ordinary. That is exactly what happens to the Platt family, who suddenly have to work together simply to survive.
What surprised us most was how quickly we became invested in the family. Beneath all the action and chaos, there is a real story about family relationships, staying together when things go wrong and discovering strengths you didn’t know you had.
Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor bring plenty of personality to the film, while the younger cast add energy and humour. The film looks spectacular on the big screen, with plenty of moments that had us laughing, jumping and wondering what on earth was going to happen next.
As London Mums reporters, we see plenty of films and events, so it’s always lovely when something genuinely catches us by surprise. We went in not expecting too much and came out saying, “Actually, we really enjoyed that!”
The End of Oak Street is imaginative, entertaining and definitely a film to watch with the family, although perhaps you’ll look at your own street slightly differently afterwards!
