Movie review: Supergirl

As a mum of two superhero obsessed children, I went into Supergirl (2026) hoping for a fun family film with plenty of action and a positive role model. What I got was something a little deeper than expected and, in many ways, more rewarding.

What stood out most to me was Kara herself. She’s brave and powerful, but she isn’t perfect. She makes mistakes, struggles with difficult emotions, and has moments of self-doubt. As a parent, I appreciated seeing a young female hero portrayed with such humanity. My daughter especially loved that Kara wasn’t trying to be anyone else; she was figuring out who she wanted to become.

The film balances exciting action with heartfelt moments. There are plenty of visually impressive scenes and superhero battles to keep younger viewers entertained, but the story also explores themes of loss, friendship, courage, and resilience. These emotional elements gave us plenty to talk about on the drive home.

The supporting characters add warmth and humour, helping to break up some of the darker moments. While a few parts of the story felt slower than my children would have liked, the film generally kept our attention throughout. Some scenes may be a little intense for very young viewers, but nothing felt excessive or inappropriate for older children and teenagers.

I also appreciated that the movie didn’t rely entirely on spectacle. It took time to develop its characters and relationships, which made the bigger moments feel more meaningful. In a genre that can sometimes feel repetitive, Supergirl managed to feel fresh and sincere.

Overall, Supergirl is an entertaining and emotionally engaging film that offers a strong message about courage, kindness, and finding your own path. It gave my family an enjoyable afternoon at the cinema and left my daughter walking out feeling inspired, which, for me, is one of the best compliments a family film can receive.
