Excellent article in New Science Magazine about the brain, its functions, new theories and studies. It actually does your head in a bit because of the complicated topic of thinking and what we know about the brain. Please excuse the pun but it’s mind boggling.
Besides functioning as one unit, it really is hard to make sense of the fact it is actually different regions making up one unit and these regions also working as one to help us with basically “everything”! (Wow, re-read that line). The article goes on to explore thinking outside of thinking, as in free energy. Our perception and experiences of events that happen in our world that are not actually physical, only our personal observations, but change and alter our thoughts. The observations influence our thinking without physically moving.

Other factors on thought formation, like how our gut and the Vagus Nerve communicate with the brain, is also fascinating. Along with all of our other senses influence our thoughts including those in our sleep. The complexity and beauty of our everyday thoughts, which is estimated to be more than 6,000 per day, is extraordinary.
My favourite quote on the whole question of our thinking was, “how and why, exactly do the lumps of wrinkly, fatty tissue sitting in our skulls actually do most of the things we think of as well, thinking?”.
Funny but still makes you really appreciate that every simple thought came from one incredibly complex organ.
